THE HERITAGE I PROMISE TO HONOR
Based off the 1924 Baker Roll, this piece depicts my family's lineage. The Baker Roll is an updated version of the Dawes Roll from1898. This was how the U.S. kept a list of those eligible for tribal membership and who was to be granted land. It was then updated in 1924 with the Baker Roll. To be an enrolled member to a Cherokee tribe you must be able to proof your relationship to anyone on this list.
The names highlighted in the "fire colors" are my great-great grandparents, Lawyer and Mary, and their son Jonah, my great grandfather. The roll also shows their age in 1924 and their blood quantum level. Growing up I never felt comfortable claiming my Cherokee heritage as I have not shared the same experiences as those who grew up on a reservation. I made this piece to serve as proof to myself that this is my family and who I am.
